PRAYER

Luke 11:1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

 

A. There are about (650) different prayers in the Bible

 

B. Prayer defined in the Bible is:

1. A (lifting) up our soul to God Ps 25:1; 143:8

2. A pouring out our (heart) to God Ps 62:8

Trust in him at all times, you people;?    pour out your hearts to him,?    for God is our refuge.

3. A crying out to God Ps 86:3

have mercy on me, Lord,?    for I call to you all day long.

4. Spiritual incense to God Rev 5:8

5. Coming before the throne of (grace) Ps 84:1-2 1 How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty!My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.; Heb 4:16 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

6. Prayer is a spiritual (sacrifice) & the fruit of our lips Heb 13:15

7. Drawing close to God in friendship, fellowship and (trust) James 4:8 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

C. Prayerlessness is (sin) 1 Sam 12:23

D. Prayer gives us (strength) in every area of our walk

1. Boldness in (outreach) “up-reach, in-reach, then out-reach”

2. High spirited singing within the assemblies

3. Child-like (peace) and joy throughout the week.

4. Courage to bear up in (difficult) times

E. Who has the right to pray?

  1. God will answer the prayers of:

–      a) His (children) Mt 6:6; 26:39,42; 7:7-11

  • But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

b) The righteous: Proverbs 15:29; 1 Peter 3:12

c) The (obedient) John 15:7; 1 John 3:21-22

d) The (Holy) 1 Timothy 2:8 -characterized by godly living

e) Devout persons who are seeking God: Acts 10:2, 30-31

f) Those who turn away from their wicked ways: 2 Chronicles 7:14; Acts 8:22
